Today, I felt like Tarzan. A jungle call like Tarzan’s before entering a pool is often times called for to ease ones way into a brisk pool in the morning.
It seemed particularly apropos today jumping into the Intercontinental Hotel’s pool on Michigan Avenue in Chicago. The Intercontinental was originally built as the Medinah Athletic Club in 1929.
Olympic swimming legend and later Hollywood actor, star of Tarzan, Johnny Weissmuller trained here. The pool like the hotel is done in an Art Deco style. There is intricate mosaic tile work in and around the four lane pool. A terraced viewing gallery overlooks the pool. Neptune, Roman god of the sea, adorns the fountain protectively overlooking lap swimmers.
I had only been back from Morocco a few days so it was a lazy solo business trip workout. It felt good just to stretch out in this historic pool. I even did a lap or two of heads up crawl-stroke as I channeled my inner Tarzan.
Ahh Ahhhh Ahhhhh
